After many
years of consistent reform and rapid growth and diversification, the Turkish economy
was tested by the global crisis and has proven its strength and resilience. Average
annual growth of more than 7% between 2003 and 2008 turned into a contraction in
2009 as the global crisis impacted exports and investment flows, but all signs now
are that the economy has rebounded quickly and is headed towards renewed growth
and an improving fiscal balance in 2010.
In any case, the crisis and the new economic order that is slowly emerging in its
aftermath have once again highlighted the importance of economic cooperation and
coordination among countries and economies. In the case of the Middle East this
is perhaps best embodied in the multiple synergies in growth, development plans
and investment opportunities between Turkey and the Arab world, as well as the wider
strategic and economic priorities that are being shaped through growing Turkish-Arab
political relations, and Turkey's importance as a major military power, a voice
of moderation in the region, an essential route and hub of energy supplies to the
West, a potential member of the European Union, and a portal to Central Asia.

With all these facts and recent developments in mind, the fifth Turkish-Arab Economic
Forum continues on the trail of major issues and ideas aired and discussed at the
previous four annual sessions of the forum in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009 and considers
prospects and priorities of Turkish-Arab economic ties in light of the new global
realities, as well as details of issues that are important for both sides such as
joint investment opportunities and Turkey’s usefulness as an entry point to both
Europe and Central Asia.
This year's forum will draw additional importance from the expected presence
of Arab finance ministers who will partake in the proceedings of the forum, and
attend the Third Turkish-Arab Financial Partnership Meeting, initiated by H.E. Mehmet
Simsek, Minister of Finance of Turkey. And since it coincides with the annual meeting
of Turkish and Arab foreign ministers in Istanbul on the 9th and 10th of June, the
2010 forum will be rich in political and strategic content at a major juncture in
the history of the Middle East.
The Turkish Arab Economic Forum is organized by Al Iktissad Wal-Aamal Group and
the Ministry of finance in cooperation with the Investment Support and Promotion
Agency of Turkey (ISPAT) and the Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK) of Turkey
and the League of Arab States. With growing stature as one of the leading economic
events in Turkey and the Arab region, the forum in 2010 will once again be held
under the patronage of the Prime Minister of Turkey, HE Recep Tayyip Erdogan and
bring together Arab prime ministers, ministers and political leaders and policy
makers, as well banking finance, trade and industry leaders, businessmen and investors
from both sides, the heads of major Arab, Turkish and international companies and
institutions, specialists on the region, major media representatives, other concerned
parties.
